April 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Thousands of runners are in training for the May 6 New Jersey Marathon at the Shore, but getting ready to go through 26.2 miles takes more than just pounding the pavement day after day.  Nutrition, injury prevention, race planning, cross training and many other factors should be part of every runner's preparation.  Two free pre-race clinics in the coming week delivered by two of New Jersey's most notable and accomplished coaches are great resources for runners of all abilities and experience as they get ready for race day.

On Saturday at 9 a.m., Garden State Track Club marathon coach Rob DeCarlo, 2011 NJSIAA T&F Coach of the year, will host a session entitled “Sweat the Small Stuff” at Road Runner Sports in the 35 Plaza Shopping Center, 65 E Route 4 West in Paramus, N.J.  DeCarlo will discuss the importance of rehearsing and visualizing everything that will happen on race day, including important details like when and how much to hydrate, whether water or a sports drink is best, how and when to get fuel to avoid “hitting the wall,” recovering from injury, proper rest during race week, and much more.  DeCarlo will present ways to help runners understand the preparatory items that will lead to a successful race.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., Chuck Schneekloth, president of the Garden State Track Club and a four-time All Big East selection at Rutgers, will speak on “Training Away from Practice” at Road Runner Sports at 501 Shoppes Blvd. (between Rt. 1 & Rt 130) in North Brunswick. N.J.  Schneekloth stresses that there are many parts to training, and that simply picking a mileage training plan is not enough.  Cross-training is emphasized, including what to do on “off-days” when not logging miles on the road.  Training different muscles while allowing for proper repair after a long run is critical, and Schneekloth will offer suggestions on improving every runner's efficiency in preparing for the marathon.

At each session, attendees will receive a 10% discount to the Road Runner Sports store, while, VIP's will receive a 20% discount on most purchases.  Both stores will also be raffling off a pair of running shoes, and refreshments will be served.

After the presentations, the Race Director of The New Jersey Marathon, and certified endurance running coach, Joe Gigas, will be on hand to answer questions about the entire weekend of activities, and to provide free, “In-Training” hats to those already registered for one of the races, as well as discounted race entries for either the full or half marathon to those interested in signing up on that day.

Interested runners can sign up for the clinics through Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/NJMarathon/events, via email at info@njmarathon.orgor by just showing up for the clinic.

With a full marathon, half-marathon, half-marathon relay, three-mile fun run/walk, kids race, Kids and Family Events, plus world-class courses designed for speed, great area restaurants and attractions, and amazing oceanfront scenery, May 4-6 are circled on calendars all over the Garden State and beyond.

The centerpiece of the weekend is the New Jersey Marathon on Sunday, May 6, a full 26.2-mile race which begins at Monmouth Park in Oceanport and meanders through eight beautiful New Jersey shore towns, including Monmouth Beach, Deal, Allenhurst, Lock Arbour, Asbury Park and Ocean Grove before reaching the finish line on the Long Branch Promenade (north of Pier Village).  The Full Marathon will start at 8 a.m., and the first corral of the Half Marathon and Half Marathon Relay is scheduled to start at 6:50 a.m.

Registration for all events, course views, information about volunteering and sponsorship and details of the entire weekend of activities and more are available at the race Website at www.NJMarathon.org.
