New York, NY - Richard P. Brown, MD, and Patricia Gerbarg, MD, award-winning authors and leaders in Complementary and Alternative Medicine for psychiatry, will teach Mind-Body Practices in the Treatment of Stress, Trauma, and Disconnection: Research Evidence, Neuroscience, and Experiential Component on April 20, 2012, 1:30 -3:00 pm, at the Fifth Congress on Integrative Psychiatry at the Martini Plaza, Groningen, The Netherlands. The theme of this year’s mental health conference is Interconnectedness.

Dr. Brown will introduce participants to theoretical background, research evidence, and clinical applications of powerful self-regulation strategies to improve the well-being of practitioners as well as that of their patients. Dr. Brown and Dr. Gerbarg will review the use of Breath~Body~Mind techniques to relieve symptoms of stress and trauma following mass disasters, including their work following the September 11, 2001 NY World Trade Center attacks, the 2004 Southeast Asia Tsunami, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill, and the wars in Rwanda and the Sudan.

Dr. Gerbarg will discuss effects of Breath~Body~Mind practices on symptoms of stress and trauma. She will emphasize the symptom of disconnection and demonstrate through neuroscience and case illustrations how mind-body practices support bonding and restore capacity for connectedness. Dr. Brown will lead experiential practices including gentle Qigong movements, Coherent Breathing, Resistance Breathing (Ujjayi or Ocean Breath), Breath Moving, and Open Focus meditation. How to build upon this knowledge and use it in clinical practice will be discussed.

Other presenters at the conference are Paul Gilbert, who will talk about Compassion Founded Therapy, Lama Michel Rinpoche, Rupert Sheldrake, and Dr. Andrew Weill. More about the conference can be read at congresintegralepsychiatrie.nl/Congres_2012/workshops.php
