Follow on Google News | Many Creative Gifts Adopts a Sheep! Many Creative Gifts is the proud adoptive parent of a beautiful Coopworth sheep named "Princess Maple Leaf" who lives on the family-owned Owens Farm in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, and is thriving as a mother herself after a few close calls.
A Coopworth is a breed that was developed in the 1970s for New Zealand's grass-fed sheep industry and is known for its lustrous fleece. Caroline and David Owens, the Pennsylvania family behind Owens Farm, purchased Princess from a breeder in West Virginia last year, and she apparently really stood out from the rest of the flock through her friendliness and curiosity. She sheared a gorgeous fleece and ended up having triplets!! Princess managed to feed all three rams so well that each is "chunky and vigorous." Her one baby this year is a girl, and she will be kept on the farm for breeding and perpetuating Princess' characteristics. Phyllis of Many Creative Gifts in the mean time is going through the process of turning Princess' sheep fleece into spun yarn. She has managed to "skirt" and wash the fleece and awaits her new "carding" equipment. Her blog post on processing fleece gives step-by-step instructions and pictures of how to do it yourself in a small space with little equipment. Updates on the Owens Farm, Princess and her new lamb, and Phyllis' ongoing fleece processing are available on Phyllis' blog at www.manycreativegifts.blogspot.com and her website www.manycreativegifts.com. # # # Phyllis Serbes, President and Owner of Many Creative Gifts, is frequently featured in publications and websites such as www.AllFreeCrochet.com and Inside Crochet magazine.
