New Exhibition 'Things That Do Not Exist' in Amsterdam

'Things That Do Not Exist' is an intriguing title for an art exhibition, and interest ran high among the crowd gathered at ArTicks Gallery for the opening night on March 18th 2012.

April 5, 2012 - PRLog -- Underground contemporary artist Rocco OK ROCCO Pezzella did not disappoint, presenting a striking mix of photographs, videos and a cybersculpture showing  fantastical structures merging into human forms.

The figures often look too fragile to support the sculptures, which suggest cityscapes and planetary systems. These immediately draw the eye, and the human forms are perceived only on closer inspection. People also morph into animals: one figure who seems filled with strength by his union with sculptural form is the man with the head of an elephant, standing squarely with one hand raised in salute or command.

Creatures in a state of flux

The photographs are monochromatic, dark, and dreamlike, their subjects emerging from deep, obscuring shadows. They seem to be creatures in a state of flux, with no final shape, unwilling or unused to being captured in a static image. Despite the element of fantasy at play, the lines are clean and uncluttered; the influence of technological design seems also present.

In Rocco's video work, the ambient light is greater and the flow of movement contributes more of a sense of the plane inhabited by these Things That Do Not Exist. More of their details and features are discernable. The interaction between the human and sculptural forms seems less dreamlike and more logical, in the context of their own (non-) existence.

Cybersculpture

The simultaneous reality and unreality that is the keynote of Things That Do Not Exist is most prominent in the cybersculpture. To the naked eye, merely an arcane design on a small piece of paper within a Perspex box. When viewed with the appropriate app on an iPad, the paper disappears and the true, yet imaginary, occupant of the box is revealed: a silver figure crouched on its haunches, the body of a man with the head of a bird.

Rocco Pezzella has succeeded in producing a solo show that is thought-provoking and well executed. The almost whimsical concept is treated with a monochrome sobriety that grants the Things That Do Not Exist a life of their own.

Things That Do Not Exist – A Solo Show by Rocco OK ROCCO Pezzella can be seen at ArTicks Gallery until April 15.
