Sunscreen works by absorbing or reflecting the suns UV rays away from our skin. There are many brands and forms of sunscreen to chose from. Use sunscreen in addition to shade, hats, and clothing to protect your skin.
We need to use a product with a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 to protect against the suns ultraviolet B, or burning  rays. We need protection from ultraviolet A rays as well as they penetrate deeper into the skin and cause premature aging and skin cancer. “Broad spectrum” sun screens help protect against both UVA and UVB rays. “Chemical-free” sunscreens are available for those who have sensitive skin and allergies.
Apply sunscreen generously and evenly about 20-30 minutes before exposure to the sun to allow it to bond to your skin. Watch for the expiry date on your sunscreen as the chemicals break down and the product will not be effective past its expiry date.
11:00a.m. to 4:00 p.m. late spring to early fall are the peak times to ensure protection from the suns damaging rays. Remember: exposure is increased when there is reflection from the snow, water, and light coloured sand. Snow actually reflects up to 80% of the suns rays, so use that sunscreen even if you are outside in the winter!
