Woman Charged With Stealing Funds from Archdiocese

A 67 year-old NY woman has been charged with stealing from the church and as it turns out, a background check might have saved the day.

 
PRLog - Apr. 4, 2012 - SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Anita Collins, 67 of New York, has been formally charged with embezzling about $1 million from The NY Archdiocese while working in the finance office. Collins had been hired in 2003; however the church did not conduct a background check. She does have a criminal history of theft.
Church and law enforcement officials state Collins had sent false invoices to the archdiocese and then issued checks in small amounts (enough to stay under the radar) to cover the invalid invoices. The theft issue was eventually located by utilization of a 3rd party audit.
The church now conducts criminal background checks of their new employees.
