Follow on Google News | History of Lake Sunapee Told Through PostcardsLocal author Paul D. Rheingold pens new book on this Sullivan County landmark.
Lake Sunapee in southern New Hampshire is one of the gems of New England. It is 10 miles long, and at 1,100 feet in elevation, it is the highest large lake in the state. It is dominated at its southern end by the magnificent Mount Sunapee. The lakeshore has an unusually interesting history, traced here in postcard views, many from the start of the 20th century. They tell a story of large resort hotels, steamboat travel, and trains, all in the era before the automobile. The lake itself has been a major center of sailing, powerboating, water skiing, fishing, and swimming. Today, the large resorts are gone, and the shore is dominated by thousands of cottages along its 32 miles of waterfront. The towns on the lake as they were a century ago are also fully illustrated— Highlights of Lake Sunapee: • Lake activities • The steamboat and railroad era • The grand hotel era • Sunapee Harbor • Burkhaven up to Georges Mills • Newbury up to Fishers Bay • The automobile and cottage era Paul D. Rheingold and his family have been summer residents of Sunapee for 33 years. He is a member of the Sunapee Historical Society and the Lake Sunapee Protective Association. He is a practicing lawyer with his home in Rye, NY, which is the subject of his previous book in the Postcard History series.
