Siege Developing Windows Kernel Security Training For Advanced DoD Operators

April 3, 2012 - PRLog -- March 23, 2012: Siege Technologies signed a five year contract with ANRC to develop lectures and labs on cutting edge offensive and defense Windows kernel security. Courses include Windows Kernel development for 32 and 64 bit architectures, as well as Windows kernel attack and subversion techniques.

Siege anticipates delivery of the training material by summer 2012. Training will take place at DoD designated facilities. Courses and labs may be licensed to non-DoD customers.

The request for cutting edge training comes at a critical time. Although the US Federal Government spent billions of dollars in 2011 on cybersecurity, both the number and severity of cyber-intrusions and data leaks have increased. In a March 20, 2012 hearing before the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on emerging threats and capabilities, acting Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) director Dr. Kraig Gabriel stated the matter frankly:

“DARPA’s bottom line: DoD is capability limited, both defensively and offensively […] DARPA’s belief is that the Department must have the capability to conduct offensive operations in cyberspace to defend our Nation, Allies, and interests.”

At a separate meeting that day, Gen. Keith Alexander, head of Cyber Command and the National Security Agency (NSA) emphasized that it is the DoD’s responsibility to respond to cyberattacks, using both offensive and defensive capabilities. By developing up-to-date training for advanced DoD operators, Siege hopes to play its part to strengthen the security of US defenses and US critical infrastructures.
