During the month of April 2012, which is international sarcoidosis awareness month there will be numerous events held across Canada and through out the world to raise awareness about the disease. These events include walk a thons, dinners, community group gatherings and campaigns to hand out flyers and brouchures to the public. April 13, 2012 is a day to remember and to show your support by wearing purple and white. The National Sarcoidosis Organization has made an informational brochure which offers an insight to the disease and also gives those who don't know anything about Sarcoidosis a basic understanding of the illness. They have also placed many public ad's and have participated in media interviews to help make the public aware that this is a very true and debilitating disease and not just a hard name to say when asked.
Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease which can affect any organ or system in the body. This disease causes the body’s immune system to over-react, forming granulomas or groups of cells(nodules)
The goal during awareness month in Canada through the National Sarcoidosis Organization is to make the government aware of just how many people in the country suffer but to also inform them that this disease is multi – systemic and does not limit itself to a single organ. There is a great demand through out Canada for this awareness, as many have to deal with this lack of knowledge and understanding on a regular basis when having to go through many invasive tests and procedures to help diagnose and manage this disease. More awareness about this disease and a better understanding by all is needed to better care for, and support those in need.
The National Sarcoidosis Organization is non profit, Canadian based organization which helps to raise funds for research, resources and awareness. They offer a website that is up to date with resources available and information that is useful. April 2012 they have made huge efforts to get the most awareness across the country in many forms such as publications and through media and offering their support to those holding or hosting events of their own.
