In March 2011, the northeastern coast of Japan was ravaged by an 8.9 earthquake and a tsunami so large it swept away entire villages and took the lives of thousands of people. The recovery efforts began in earnest, led by the Malaysian Red Crescent and Japan's Red Cross—IFRC organizations dedicated to rebuilding these Japanese communities through grants and ongoing support.
In a recent report, Japan's Red Cross announced its dedication to extensive recovery efforts and raising relief funds in the amount of roughly $500 million. From these funds, the organizations provide immediate release, elderly and medical support, recovery to survivors, economic revitalization, and education support.
"The devastation on Japan's northeastern coast was nothing short of catastrophic, and forever changed the lives of the people it affected," says Gamany. "While all I wanted to do was be there in person to physically lend a hand, it wasn't possible at the time. So, I did the next best thing I could think to do which was to offer what monetary help I could provide. And, I am thrilled to see the good being done in this region."
