Children’s Ezine Guardian Angel Kids: Save Our Forests – April 2012 Issue

The Guardian Angel Publishing and Guardian Angel Kids office moves to the beach every winter and by now the time is winding to an end. Although there are not many trees on the island (mostly palm trees), there are Live Oaks across the sound in the Naval Live Oaks Reserve which is now part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

The ancient oak forest was preserved by the federal government to provide the tree stock for trees as early as 1829. Those live oaks were the building blocks of America’s naval sailing ships. It may have been America’s first government tree farm. They were sturdy trees and made remarkable ships for the U.S. Navy to sail the seven seas.

A busy Naval shipyard was located across Pensacola Bay which built and maintained wooden sailing ships from the 1820’s through the Civil War era. Then iron ships began replacing the wooden ships.

Historically, trees have contributed to our lives every day in many ways— all around us. From the early tools of man to the air we breathe, to our homes and furniture today.
