Non-profit Blackstone Valley organizations are invited to apply to become the Charitable Recipient of the 2012 UniBank Blackstone River Valley Greenway Challenge.

April 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Non-profit Blackstone Valley organizations are invited to apply to become the Charitable Recipient of the 2012 UniBank Blackstone River Valley Greenway Challenge.

To be eligible for consideration, non-profit organizations, including school groups and 501(c)3 clubs, must have a mission similar to that of the Greenway Challenge — which includes promoting the recreational opportunities in the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, supporting the 2015 Swimmable-Fishable clean water campaign; clean-up and maintenance of  greenways, hiking and biking trails, wild life projects, environmental education and development of waterway access.

Last year, the Greenway Challenge Steering Committee selected and awarded the Blackstone River Watershed Association $2,500 as the Charitable Recipient of its 2011 event. To date, the Greenway Challenge has provided more than $15,000 to its Charitable Recipients.

Charitable Recipient applicants will be required to provide an explanation of the organization or club’s mission, assist in the planning of the 2012 Greenway Challenge, and host a transition site on the day of the event. For application details, visit the Greenway Challenge website at http:/ greenwaychallenge.org/CharitableRecipient.html, or contact Barbara Dixon at 401-762-0250, ext. 30.

The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2012.

Other past Greenway Challenge Charitable Recipients have included the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation, The Blackstone River Coalition, Blackstone River Bikeway Association, Waters Farm Preservation, Inc., Mohegan Council Boy Scouts of America, and the Blackstone River Watershed Council/Friends of the Blackstone.

The UniBank Blackstone River Valley Greenway Challenge is New England's premier adventure race where teams run, paddle, and bike in a variety of competitive divisions through Blackstone River Valley towns in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The race is September 29, 2012. Its mission is to promote the recreational quality of life in the Blackstone River Valley. Working with the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor Commission and other partner organizations, the Greenway Challenge, in its 12th year, supports clean water campaigns, hiking and biking trails, wildlife projects, environmental education and development of waterway access.

UniBank is the 2012 Title sponsor. Red Star WorldWear and Taco/The White Family Foundation are River Champion Sponsors. Whitin Community Center is Trail Blazer sponsor and Massachusetts State Representative George Peterson is Pace Setter sponsor. The Town of Cumberland Parks & Recreation Dept., and On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina, are Friend sponsors.
