Boston Breakers and D.C. United Women to Meet in Inter-League Match

April 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Sacramento, California. (April 1, 2012): The Boston Breakers of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Elite League will meet D.C. United Women of the USL W-League in an exhibition game on May 12 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. The inter-league match will be sponsored by the Washington Area Girls Soccer League (WAGS), with a portion of the proceeds going to the charity Headers for Hope.

Jerry Zanelli, Commissioner of the WPSL and the WPSL Elite League said, “We have been trying for years to get cross league games going and are excited about the Boston Breakers vs. D.C. United match. This is great for women's soccer.”

After spending three seasons in the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) and anther three in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS), the Boston Breakers will play the 2012 season in the new WPSL Elite League, along with former WPS teams Western New York Flash and Chicago Red Stars, WPSL sides ASA Chesapeake Charge, FC Indiana, New England Mutiny and New York Fury and Philadelphia Fever. The Elite League was created following the announced suspension of the WPS 2012 season in order to provide an opportunity for high level women soccer.

The match will mark the return of Cat Whitehill, who played two years with the WPS Washington Freedom before moving to Atlanta Beat and now Boston Breakers, to Washington, D.C. area soccer action. Whitehill is joined by 2012 Breakers captain Leslie Osborne, Katie Schoepfer, U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team defender Bianca D’Agostino and Australian internationals Kyah Simon and Tameka Butt.

"We are looking forward to a great game with D.C. United Women, as we both prepare for the upcoming season," said Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole. "We can't wait to play at the Maryland SoccerPlex again, it's one of the best women's soccer venues around, and the fans are always supportive of the game."

The game follows the Breaker’s WPSL Elite League opening match on May 10 on the road against Chesapeake Charge and precedes D.C. United Women’s home opener on May 19 against Virginia Beach Piranhas. D.C. United Women expect to finalize their roster shortly before the match with Boston. Players from several top universities including Maryland, Virginia, Penn State and Stanford will help make up the United Women’s roster.

WAGS is one of oldest all-girls youth soccer leagues in the country, and the club’s sponsorship of the match is expected to generate strong ticket sales. Single-game general seating tickets are now on sale along with season tickets. Single-game VIP tickets will be released at a later date, depending on availability.

Headers for Hope is a national charity dedicated to fighting cancer, combining love of the beautiful game with the desire to help those in need. The organization was established in honor of every person who has been diagnosed with cancer and every family member and friend who has supported them.

The WPSL Elite League features eight teams: The Boston Breakers, Philadelphia Fever, Western New York Flash, Chicago Red Stars, FC Indiana, New England Mutiny, New York Fury, and ASA Chesapeake Charge.
