March 31, 2012 - PRLog -- Boston, MA - Each year in April, otolaryngologists – head and neck surgeons – and other voice health professionals recognize the importance of voice health with World Voice Day. Boston Medical Center’s – Center for Voice and Swallowing is celebrating World Voice Day and voice health with a day of free screenings and seminars open to the public on Wednesday, April 4th.

On Wednesday, April 4, the Center for Voice and Swallowing will sponsor the 5th Annual Free Voice Screenings from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Boston Medical Center’s  Moakley Building, Ground Floor, at the Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery Clinic, 830 Harrison Avenue in Boston.

From 7:00 – 8:00 pm, join Pieter Noordzij, M.D. of the Center for Voice and Swallowing as he explains the way your voice functions and how to keep it healthy during the Free Seminar, “Understanding and Maintaining a Healthy Voice”. The seminar will take place at Boston Medical Center’s FGH Building, Ground Floor, in the Carter Conference Center, 820 Harrision Avenue in Boston.

World Voice Day encourages men and women of all ages to evaluate their vocal health and adopt good voice habits. “People that use their voice frequently in their careers or pastimes such as teachers, lawyers and singers should be mindful of vocal health,” according to Pieter Noordzij, MD, otolaryngologist at the Center for Voice and Swallowing at Boston Medical Center and associate professor of otolaryngology at Boston University School of Medicine. “Constantly trying to speak above the fray in a noisy classroom or hitting that high note night after night can strain the voice and lead to problems down the line. A few preventive measures, however, can go a long way in preserving vocal health for one’s lifetime.”

Voice screenings are an important tool to maintaining your voice health. They can provide a good measure of how well your voice and throat are functioning and help to avoid future problems, especially if you are in a profession that relies heavily on voice function, are experiencing hoarseness or are a former smoking. Screenings can provide a baseline image of a healthy larynx for future comparison or help identify early laryngeal problems before they become serious.
