Today, the nation's military Reserve components (the total of all National Guard members and Reserve forces from all branches of the military) make up almost half of the nation’s total available military manpower. The current National Defense Strategy mandates that the National Guard and Reserve as full partners in the nation’s integrated Total Force. U.S. Reserve forces will spend more time away from the workplace defending the country in support of a demanding operations and training mission to maintain their readiness.
In this environment, civilian employers, in adherence with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), play a very critical role in the defense of the nation by complying with existing employment laws protecting the rights of workers who serve in the Reserve component.
James Dicks, a former U.S. Marine, completely supports USERRA that protects employees currently assigned to the National Guard or Reserves. Dicks spends a large amount of time in support of the troops.
