April 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Boca Raton, FL –  The largest consumer of energy in the entire world is the U.S. military so it’s no surprise that with energy costs only getting higher, the Pentagon and the U.S. Defense Department are now forcing the military to drastically reduce energy consumption. For many installations and bases lighting consumes approximately 25 percent of the total energy and provides an attractive target for energy trimming efforts.

Energy conservation efforts are at the top of the priority list for members of the US Coast Guard  Sector New Orleans. Staring in October 2009, under the guise of the Facility Energy Efficiency (FEEF) project, Airman Edgar Pagaza had an idea when he looked at the ceiling. He saw that 4 T12 lamps were being used and asked himself if there was solution to reduce the buzzing and quality of light. With thorough research, he contacted The Green Savings Company about its T5 Retrofit Kit.

Upon gathering information and bringing it to his superiors, they decided that the T5 Retrofit Kit was a good idea for reducing the wattage and samples were ordered for testing.  Two fixtures that had 4 T12 lamps using 180 watts were retrofitted with 2 T5 Retrofit Kits using 56 watts, for a 69% wattage reduction.  With the amount of hours the lights are being used, a return on investment was calculated to be only 18 months.  With this information the FEEF proposal was submitted.  Unfortunately, the grant was not approved due to budgetary constraints.

During the summer of 2010 another energy audit was performed prior to submitting another FEEF proposal for February 2011.  This time the proposal was approved and the T5 Retrofit Kit was sent out for bid.  Overall, there were a total of 600 4’ units and 100 2’ units installed. In the months since  the installation, the kilowatt usage has decreased exponentially which has saved the base thousands of dollars per month thereby savings taxpayers money as well.

“We are really happy with the results of the lighting retrofit project. It was an integral component of our overall energy reduction policy,” said a high ranking officer on the base.  “The brightness in the offices and hallways has improved dramatically and I have received many compliments. Hopefully, our base can be used as a model for energy efficiency for the rest of the Coast Guard.”

“The Green Savings Company was happy to assist the US Coast Guard Air Station in New Orleans in saving money. This project started with one person trying to make a difference. If we all made an effort to use just a little bit less energy our country could save billions” said Scott Raybin, President of The Green Savings Company.
