Nonprofit Reflects on What Works about Warrior Home®

March 29, 2012 - PRLog -- CAMP LEJEUNE, NC, March 29, 2012 – Three handicap accessible homes aboard the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune will be closing almost exactly five years after they were opened.  The two Warrior Houses® and the Warrior House® Resource Center, located along Seth Williams Blvd., will be renovated and returned to be used for officer base housing.  The Warrior House® Program has been managed for the past five years by Hope For The Warriors®, a national nonprofit organization that supports wounded U.S. service members, their families, and families of the fallen.

Warrior House® has been instrumental in supporting wounded service members and their families and Gold Star Families.  Families had access to the homes when their service members were medevac’d to Camp Lejeune.  Wounded service members also used the homes when returning to the base for Homecomings, Memorial Services, or on orders while they waited for permanent handicap-accessible housing.  The Warrior House® was just one key component of the support given to commands by Hope For The Warriors®.

“The Warrior House® Program united an entire community—military, civilian and nonprofits alike,” Robin Kelleher, Hope For The Warriors® President said.  “The Warrior House® Program was more than just property management.  Hope For The Warriors® and the community embraced the guests at the homes at their most fragile time, restoring hope and stability.”

The Warrior House® Grand Opening and the first homecoming of then 2nd Lt. Andrew Kinard, USMC, was highlighted on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams in his ongoing segment, What Works.  The news report originally aired on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 and highlights the Warrior House® and a wheelchair and van donation through the Hope For The Warriors® A Warrior’s Wish® Program.  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_KAv3L5cjc).  



Hope For The Warriors® will continue to provide guidance and counsel to military units through their Operation Homecoming Initiative.  

“Hope For The Warriors® is proud to continue our work with commands on Operation Homecoming,” Peggy Rochon, Hope For The Warriors® Program Developer said.  “Homecomings and the reunion of the complete battalion are an integral part of rehabilitation for both the wounded and the service members who return without injury.”

The donation of the homes had been made possible by Actus Lend Lease, the company that owns and manages all of the housing aboard the military base.  The company received nationwide recognition for the Warrior House® Program.

The Warrior House® Program will be extending overseas to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany where Hope For The Warriors® is renovating an apartment to be used by service members waiting for orders back to the United States or to rejoin their units.
