March 28, 2012 - PRLog -- The Motors.co.uk competition to find the ‘Most Deserving’ local hero which attracted more than 110 nominations and nearly 3,000 votes for the 11 finalists has now closed. The winner is Caroline Rutley-Frayne from Tiverton in Devon who receives up to £10,000 towards the cost of a car advertised on Motors.co.uk, and a £2,500 donation to the charity of her choice – Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

A public vote for the 11 finalists saw Caroline as one of the three most popular candidates after local press and online coverage boosted her total in the last week of voting. Phill Jones, commercial director at leading used car website Motors.co.uk, said, “We chose Caroline as the ‘Most Deserving’ for three main reasons; we were moved by her story and her positive attitude in recovery; she clearly enjoys huge support from a wide cross section of her community; and we can see that the car will make a significant difference to her quality of life.”

Caroline was the victim of a dangerous driver (since convicted) who caused a collision with the motorcycle she was riding with her husband. Caroline was left with life threatening injuries and subsequently lost her right arm and leg. Her husband was killed in the collision. A little over three years later, Caroline is rebuilding her life with a positive attitude that impresses everyone who meets her. She volunteers at a local hospital and a school, and raises funds for Devon Air Ambulance Trust who’s emergency helicopter attended Caroline and her husband.

Heléna Holt, Chief Executive of Devon Air Ambulance Trust said, “We are absolutely delighted to be the recipient of the charity donation as a result of Caroline winning this competition.  However we are even more delighted that Caroline has won the car as it will make such a huge difference to her life. Caroline’s story attracted huge publicity at the time and I think people remembered her during this competition. She has been a dedicated supporter of Devon Air Ambulance Trust and I’m so pleased to see her recognised.”

Runners-up in the competition were Fi Star-Stone who offers a popular free advice service for new parents and raises funds for Save the Children, and business partners Jason Odle and Ben Davis who are highly innovative and successful in raising funds and publicity for Saint Michael’s Hospice in Harrogate.

Phill Jones concluded, “We weren’t sure what to expect when we started this competition, but we’re delighted by the response it received. We met some remarkable people who have all made the world a better place, so I am delighted that we were able to show some recognition of their work.”
