Traffic Safety Coalition Applauds Arizona Senators for Supporting Continued use of Photo Enforcement

In Five Separate Votes, Arizona State Senators support life-saving technology

March 26, 2012 - PRLog -- CHICAGO – Arizona cities and police departments will continue using red light cameras to catch law breakers and protect drivers on their roadways thanks to state legislators who repeatedly voted in support of photo enforcement.  In five separate votes over the course of the last three weeks, Arizona state senators rejected bills that would have limited or banned the use of this life saving technology in the state.

“In voting not once or twice – but FIVE times – in support of photo enforcement, Arizona’s elected officials have put traffic safety before extreme politics - and that’s a great thing,” said Traffic Safety Coalition (TSC) national co-chair Paul Oberhauser, whose daughter was killed in 2002 by a speeding driver who ran a red light.  “The TSC applauds the pro-road safety votes in Arizona and across the country over the last three weeks and thanks our elected officials for supporting technology and policies that we know save lives.”

Red light cameras and speed cameras are used in more than one dozen cities across Arizona to deter red light running and speeding and reduce the number of crashes caused by drivers who ignore traffic safety laws.  Cameras are operating with enormous success.  A 2011 study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showed a 79 percent reduction in fatal red light running crashes in Chandler, Arizona from 2004-2008 compared to 1992-1996 – the highest reduction seen in all 14 cities studied.

Arizona is the latest state in the country to reinforce its support for life-saving photo enforcement.  In late February, Colorado legislators voted against attempts to ban safety cameras while members of the Iowa State Senate voted unanimously in March to increase penalties for drivers who illegally pass stopped buses unloading school children.

In Illinois, the General Assembly voted in February to authorize the use of speed safety cameras in Chicago’s school and park zones to make roads safer for kids.  Legislators in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are also considering legislation in the coming months to expand current traffic safety camera programs and authorize new ones.
