April 4, 2012 - PRLog -- BUFFALO GROVE, ILLINOIS— Major advancements in technology have given orthodontists many new methods to better serve their patients. One orthodontist in Buffalo Grove is employing the use of 3-D X-ray technology to give patients great orthodontic treatment results more quickly.

Dr. Yan Razdolsky, a Buffalo Grove orthodontics expert, uses i-CAT cone beam CT technology for many of his cases. The CBCT system exposes patients to less radiation than a traditional CT scan.

Exposure from an i-CAT scan is 87 microsieverts of radiation, which is the equivalent of 11 days of natural radiation exposure from air, water and food. In comparison, standard exposure from a CT scan is around 2,000 microsieverts of radiation.

The CBCT system can scan both jaws at the same time, while a regular CT scan can only scan the top and the bottom jaw separately. This greatly reduces a patient’s exposure to radiation, as they only have to enter the scanner once.

The CBCT system also pinpoints areas with up to 0.1 millimeter of accuracy, and present clearer pictures of patients’ mouths. This unparalleled accuracy allows orthodontists to create treatment plans with greater precision than ever.

These differences are due to the type of beam used when scanning a patient. CBCT scanners send radiation through a narrow, cone-shaped beam, which can give doctors a 3-D picture of a patient’s bone structure, sinuses, teeth, and jaw line. Traditional CT scans only show a 2-D picture of a general area.

At his practice, Forever Smiles, Razdolsky employs the use of the CBCT system as an everyday tool for SureSmile patients. SureSmile is an orthodontic treatment program that uses CBCT technology to accurately map out a treatment plan for patients requiring braces.
First the patient is fitted with brackets on their teeth, which are then scanned using SureSmile software to create an image that serves as a map for Razdolsky when resetting the patient’s teeth for ideal alignment.

“These scans give us a clear picture of what we’re dealing with,” Razdolsky said. “They have been successful in helping us see supernumerary teeth that weren’t visible in a 2-D scan, and they enable us to view teeth roots, which is helpful when determining ideal tooth movement.”

Treatment plans are customized for each patient and applied to the patient’s archwire by SureSmile robots. These robots ensure the most precise movement of the archwire to match each patient’s prescription. Utilizing robots ensures Razdolsky has maximum control over the patient’s tooth movement, which leads to a faster treatment time.

Despite common misconceptions, teeth are not “moving faster” when employing SureSmile technology. Using robots and 3-D imaging simply takes the guesswork out of a typical orthodontic plan and allows doctors to make each adjustment precisely, and therefore results in faster treatment times, Razdolsky said.

Not only do patients experience shorter treatment time, they also see benefits to their gums. Using SureSmile technology to treat bite problems increases bite stability, which lowers a patient’s risk of gum recession and bone loss.

Patients should talk with their orthodontist to see if the SureSmile program is right for them.
