March 26, 2012 - PRLog -- Humanity Road, a finalist in the 2012 Shorty Awards Life Saving Hero category, announced it has teamed with the White House to become a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national program recognizing those who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service.

As a Certifying Organization for the Award, Humanity Road is responsible for verifying service hours, nominating potential recipients and delivering the award. “We are extremely proud to recognize our most outstanding volunteers with the President’s Volunteer Service Award,” said Chris Thompson, President.  “Humanity Road volunteers are role models, donating their time, energy and talent to bring us closer together as neighbors and a Nation. The award is our way of thanking these volunteers and inspiring everyone to make volunteering a central part of their lives.”

“Even if you’ve never volunteered before, the President’s Volunteer Service Award is within your reach,” Bettie Tussey, Humanity Road Volunteer Team Lead said. “There are so many ways to contribute, and your work may help save lives. Every volunteer hour makes a difference in improving the quality of life for others.  We encourage everyone to get involved.  Together, we can strengthen our communities – one hour at a time.”

Humanity Road Volunteers are finalists in the “Life Saving Hero” category for the 4th Annual Shorty Awards.  The Shorty Awards ceremony will take place Monday night in New York City.   While the President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes hours of service, The Shorty awards recognizes message content.  The #LifeSavingHero Shorty Award, is presented in partnership with The Weather Channel's Coast Guard Alaska, a show about an elite team that risks their lives in search and rescue missions in harsh weather condition.  This award will be awarded to a real life hero using Twitter and the social web to save lives.

The Shorty Awards is a worldwide event engaging hundreds of thousands of Twitter users who identify the best people and organizations on social media, culminating in a blockbuster ceremony in New York City and has been referred to as the Oscars of Twitter.

"Being nominated for the Shorty Award for Life Saving Hero is exciting," said Chris Thompson, “It is a great honor for our volunteers. Receiving this type of recognition inspires and motivates them and in that sense we feel they already won.”

Through skilled and self-directed work teams, Humanity Road and its network of global volunteers aim to provide the public and disaster response agencies worldwide with the timely and accurate aid information they need at times of crisis.
