March 23, 2012 - PRLog -- As the school year comes to an end, Southern California-based Pride Learning Center (www.pridelearningcenter.com) gears up for an influx of phone calls from frustrated parents who can’t seem to understand why their children aren’t performing academically “up to par.”  Founder Karina Richland, a literacy and learning disability specialist, reveals how and what to look for if a learning disorder is suspected.

“Learning Disabilities affect as many as one out of every five children,” remarks Richland, M.A.  “Parents are often the first to notice that something does not seem right.  Parents intuition is usually correct.”

According to Richland, some common warning signs are:

In Preschool Age Children:

•   Pronunciation problems
•   Difficulty rhyming words
•   Trouble learning numbers and alphabet
•   Extremely restless and easily distracted
•   Fine motor skills slow to develop

In School Age Children:

•   Slow to learn the connection between letters and sounds
•   Makes consistent reading and spelling errors including letter reversals (b/d), inversions (m/w), transpositions (felt/left), and substitutions (house/home).
•   Slow to remember facts
•   Slow to learn new skills, relies heavily on memorization
•   Awkward, fist-like or tight pencil grip
•   Trouble with word problems
•   Difficulty with handwriting
•   Grades do not match the child’s intelligence

"The sooner a child receives the right kind of help, it will give that child a chance to develop skills needed to lead a successful and productive life." states Karina Richland.
