March 22, 2012 - PRLog -- Business plans take many forms. In “Working Your Plan,” Welding & Gases Today explores how distributors and suppliers in the gases and welding industry are setting their businesses up for success. The article is part of the cover story “Strategic Planning” in the Spring 2012 issue of the leading magazine for the gases and welding equipment industry.

Last year, Capitol Welders Supply in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, decided it was time to include its employees and develop a strategic plan and formal process to accomplish it. Teams of stakeholders were assembled and all had to answer the question: What do we want Capitol Welders Supply to look like seven years from now? Once they had the vision, they worked backwards, discussing what they wanted and needed to bring this vision to reality. The result was a seven-year plan, complete with an annual agenda broken down month by month with objectives, goals and a review process with built-in accountability.

When it comes to building a long term plan, the first two or three years of the plan may come easy. “Looking past the initial years and really focused on where you want your company to be is where the real work comes in,” says Capitol Welders Vice President Kelly Root. He adds, “The real benefit to any planning may not come from achieving the goals, but building teamwork and confidence among employees that the company’s future is going to be bright because they can help make it bright. They can make it bright by being part of something special, by doing something to make our company better.”
