Gems such as Les Baux de Provence, one of the most beautiful villages in France, where you spend an evening, Saint- Remy de Provence (two nights stay) with its splendid inner- town and one where Van Gogh painted. An excellent time to visit St. Remy de Provence is Whit Monday, when the Fete de Transhumance takes place- thousands of sheep, donkeys and goats tour the town prior to going off for their summer grazing in the Alps. A cycle to the local lake just above St. Remy de Provence is a special place for a picnic.
Village fetes are frequent in Les Alpilles. They are active, spectacular events totally different to those experienced in other countries. Weekly markets have a distinct “buzz”, a time when friends meet up in the open air bar and where there is laughter, good humour and generosity of spirit . In particular, the market at Eygalieres should not be missed.
Arles, another gem, is also on this cycling tour. A famous Roman capital of France, Arles has an impressive Roman amphitheatre, Les Arenes. Many displays and “spectaculars”
Glanum, one of most significant historical sites in France is easily visited on this biking holiday.
The cycling is through orchards, vineyards, and quiet country roads, enhanced by the scents of wild thyme, sage, oak and pine forests. You might also sight a Borelli's eagle soaring in the warm air currents.
French Pedals trialled the route using members of its “young in spirit”, “mature in years “ team- Bob Davidson, Director, said,” Les Alpilles is an excellent region for a cycling holiday when you want blue skies, sun, and warm hospitality. A swim before breakfast or cool off in the pool before dinner is a great way to start or end the day- the evening meals are especially high value for money”.
Easy access to this beautiful region is made by TGV to Avignon- there are flights to Avignon, Beziers or Marseilles (with onward rail connection to Avignon).
This 7 nights cycling holiday is in 2 star, family run Logis hotels. Accommodation, breakfast, evening dinner, bike hire (hybrid bikes) and helpful route directions are included. Price :£647/person (two people sharing a room)
Extra nights are available in the historic former papal capital of Avignon. The famous bridge is well worth visiting where a multilingual commentary is available. The main square, place de l'Horlogue is typically “French” implying all the very best connotations associated with France. Former papal buildings add much to the sense of history found in Avignon.
