March 21, 2012 - PRLog -- Look for Peyton Manning to be wearing jersey number 18 when he starts with the Denver Broncos next season.  Yesterday, Manning announced his acceptance of the five-year $96 million contract to play quarterback for the Broncos.

It is reported that under the agreement, Manning will make $18 million in 2012 with no injury protection.  If he passes a March 2013 physical, guarantees of $20 million will activate for 2013 and 2014, with an undisclosed injury waiver.

Although he is a four-time NFL MVP, Manning missed the entire 2011 season due to neck injuries.  Manning traveled to Europe for stem cell therapy to help treat the bulging disc, which three previous surgeries had failed to repair.  Apparently that therapy did not help either.

Dennis Lox, M.D., a sports, physical and regenerative medicine specialist in the Tampa Bay-area, points out that regenerative medicine techniques, such as platelet-rich plasma and/or stem cell technology, have been used by many professional athletes to treat musculoskeletal injuries.

According to Dr. Lox, “Athletes have been turning to platelet-rich plasma and stem cell technology for some time and though there are not large clinical trials, many elite athletes have expressed improvement.  As technology advances, athletes will be more likely to reach out and embrace any technological advance that may help improve their career.”
