UMSL Hosts Mathematical Association of America Spring Meeting

MAA Vice President Francis Su and Washington University Professor David Wright are Conference keynote speakers

LOUIS – The Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at the University of Missouri–St. Louis hosts the Spring Meeting of the Missouri Section of the Mathematical Association of America on Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14, 2012. MAA Vice President Francis Su from Harvey Mudd College and David Wright from Washington University in St. Louis will be the keynote speakers at the meeting.

In addition, the Missouri Collegiate Mathematics Competition will be conducted on the evening of Thursday, April 12, and the morning of Friday, April 13.

Keynote speaker David Wright will speak on the connection between mathematics and music. He is currently professor and chair in the Department of Mathematics at Washington University, and he has a PhD in Mathematics from Columbia University. Wright also is a musician, arranging and composing a cappella music in jazz, blues, gospel, country, doo-wop and contemporary.

Banquet speaker Richard Delaware is an associate teaching professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, from which he also earned his PhD. In 2011, he won the UMKC Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and had previously won the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching. Delaware will present an autobiographical talk titled, “My Occasionally Intentional, but Repeatedly Distracted Path to a Mathematical Life.”

Keynote speaker and MAA Vice President Francis Su is a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and earned his PhD from Harvard University. His research is in geometric combinatorics and applications to the social sciences, and he has co-authored more than a dozen papers with undergraduates. Su’s presentation is titled “Teaching Research: Encouraging Discoveries.”

Additionally, the Conference will feature 20-minute presentations given by those who have contributed papers. Those interested in presenting may submit a contributed paper by April 6, 2012. Presenters of accepted papers are expected to register for the conference and will give 20-minute presentations.
