March 20, 2012 - PRLog -- Orlando, FL - March 20th, 2012 –  Lindsey Gergely and William Umansky, attorneys with The Umansky Law Firm (http://www.thelawman.net), were honored recently by the Florida Supreme Court for their 2011 pro bono work.  The event was also observed by The Florida Bar’s Young Lawyers Division and the Florida Pro Bono Coordinators Association.

The term Pro Bono is derived from the phrase “pro bono public” meaning “for the good of the public.” The purpose of this award is to encourage more Florida young lawyers to freely contribute their time and expertise in providing legal services to people in their community who cannot otherwise afford those services. In some instances, this will include legal services to charitable organizations which serve the poor. The emphasis of this award is on legal service to the poor. Source: http://www.flayld.org/awards/
The attorneys that were recognized for this accomplishment contributed 20 or more hours of pro bono work.  These hours were committed to cases closed during 2011 as well as project work in 2011.  Attorneys received a letter from the Chief Justice for 20 hours and were personally addressed by Chief Justice Charles T. Canady for 100 or more hours.

416 attorneys participated through legal aid in 2011.

Lindsey Gergely’s contributions were observed by The Florida Bar’s Young Lawyers Division.

The YLD Pro Bono Award recognizes the public service or legal aid performed by a young lawyer (under the age of 36 or one who has not practiced for more than five years in any jurisdiction) who provides outstanding contributions to those in need of legal services.  A nominee must be admitted to practice in Florida. The FPBCA is a voluntary association of coordinators of pro bono programs throughout Florida.  Originally the officers were Chair, Chair-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer, later modified as President and President-Elect.  The membership elects officers at the annual meeting in June and the prior year's President-Elect succeeds to the Presidency.  Original standing committees included Training, Technical Assistance, and Publication.  Added later were Public Relations, General Practice Section Pro Bono Award, and the Kay B. Meyers Award.  The Technical Assistance Committee no longer exists.  The original Executive Committee was composed of the officers, the standing committee chairs and a representative from Florida Legal Services.  The Executive Committee expanded to include the immediate past president.
