University Of Florida Gospel Choir Celebrates Over 40 Years with an Alumni Reunion Concert
GAINESVILLE, FL - For over forty-one years, the University of Florida Gospel Choir has connected students in a positive environment to perform soulful music with the gospel message. On Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 7:00 p.m., former choir members from across the country reunite to celebrate the choir's legacy in an Alumni Reunion Concert at the University Auditorium.
Throughout the decades, hundreds of African-American students joined the choir, not only to express their love of gospel music, but as an opportunity to build community and support during their years at the University of Florida. "We were amazed that our group was well-received so quickly", says Lee Bailey, original founder and music director for the University of Florida Gospel Choir. "Back in 1971, the University Of Florida was dealing with segregation. Gospel music among the black students became a way to deal with negative pressures while attending school."
The choir's unique blend of style, harmonies, and musical arrangements made them a featured attraction at churches and special events throughout the eastern half of the country. Alumni members are excited to once again share the "good news" through song with old and new friends at their alma mater.
The Alumni Reunion Concert will also feature performances by other special musical guests. The event is free and open to the public.
