Caravaggio tackled many symbolic and mythological scenes in his work, including a spectacular representation of Medusa which remains one of his most popular paintings.
Outside of his career as a painter, Caravaggio struggled to stabilize his social life and would frequently get into significant trouble which would cause him to have to move around Italy on several occasions to try to find new locations where his reputation did not precede him.
It was Caravaggio's drinking which led to many of his problems and he would often be involved in fracas in bars where misunderstandings would become further clouded by late evenings in these establishments.
Some of the success of Caravaggio today is perhaps down to his notorious lifestyle, which draws parallels to modern day rockstars. It is his ingenious qualities as a painter, though, which have ensured that his reputation has continued right up to the present day.
The technical aspect which made this artist stand out so much during his days in the Renaissance where the dramatic content which he used and the abrupt lighting which fell on his subjects, leaving a powerful image in each of his major paintings.
