The quiz, which was loosely based on the TV show Are You Smarter Than A 10-Year-Old?
The subjects covered the curriculum - everything from mathematical problems, science formulae and circuit building, to French translation, Baroque architecture, historical events, and a chronology of Dickens’ novels, as well as music and practical challenges, such as castle building, There were ‘quick fire’ rounds, questions for separate teams, an ‘odd one out’ round and a ‘practical challenge’.
The two student teams, made of up of Dunhurst pupils, revised hard and tested each other in the run up to the event. The first team was the ‘Groups’ team with 12 pupils from Groups 2 and 3 (years 5 and 6) against a team of parents. The second team was the ‘Blocks’ team comprising children from Blocks 1 and 2 (years 7 and 8). The entire school was involved as either members of the teams, judges, assistants or the audience.
In the ‘Groups v Parents’ quiz it was close all the way through, with the parents holding the lead for the first half, but the pupils managing to win 30 – 28. The ‘Blocks v Parents’ challenge saw the pupils holding the lead for most of the time, ending with a 23 – 18 win.
Jane Grubb, Head of Dunhurst commented:
“What struck me was the excitement and enthusiasm for the event from our pupils. The idea was to show how much fun learning is at Dunhurst and to present the information in an interesting an interactive way, based on the principle that ‘we learn through doing.’ The parents were really good sports in taking part, and it was an excellent insight for them to the Dunhurst curriculum.”
