March 17, 2012 - PRLog -- The Indianapolis Colts announced on March 7, 2012 that quarterback Peyton Manning was released to become a free agent.  There has been much speculation since that announcement as to which team Manning would sign with – current contenders are Denver, Arizona and Tennessee.

Manning was drafted by the Colts in 1998 and he led the team to victory in Super Bowl XLI in 2007, their first NFL Championship since Super Bowl V.  Manning, who passed for over 50,000 yards and 399 touchdowns during his 14 seasons in Indy, was a four-time league MVP.

It had come to light in mid-September 2011 that Manning had traveled to Europe for stem cell therapy.  The stem cell therapy was to help treat the bulging disc in Manning’s neck, which three previous surgeries had failed to repair.  Apparently the therapy did not help, and he missed the entire 2011 season.  Manning would have been due a $28 million signing bonus had he played the 2012 season with the Colts.

Dennis Lox, M.D., a sports, physical and regenerative medicine specialist in the Tampa Bay area, notes that the evolving emergence of regenerative medicine therapies, such as stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma, while not readily embraced by the insurance industry, are changing the health care environment.

Although the stem cell therapy did not work for Manning, and is not FDA approved, that does not mean there are not antidotal success stories of stem cell use with other orthopedic problems.  New York Yankee’s pitcher Bartolo Colon and New England Patriot’s Jarvis Green, each returned to the game after stem cell therapy, and there are a myriad of success stories of professional athletes receiving platelet-rich plasma (another therapy not FDA approved).

According to Dr. Lox, “Athletes have been turning to platelet-rich plasma and stem cell technology for some time and though there are not large clinical trials, many elite athletes have expressed improvement.  As technology advances, athletes will be more likely to reach out and embrace any technological advance that may help improve their career.”
