The funds were distributed to a mix of international, national and local charities, and were raised by staff organised activities supported by donations or cash-matching from the company.
• £32,148 came from staff contributions to charities;
• company sub-projects for causes such as the Royal British Legion raised £32,500;
• fund raising by staff in the Retail offices for The Princess Royal Trust for Carers generated £33,620;
• the balance came from matching of sponsorship and donations by the company.
Since the company’s charity committee was established in 2004, Markel and its staff have raised £410,520, and increased the amount raised year on year.

The company’s staff have also participated in a number of voluntary projects. Four volunteer days at Harrington Hill Primary, Hackney attracted a total of 65 volunteers. Nine volunteers attended the Lloyd's Sports day for pupils from Tower Hamlets Schools, and 10 staff members became reading and number partners at Thomas Buxton School one lunchtime each week. The Leeds office renovated the Carers Leeds premises, redecorating rooms and replacing old furniture with new.
The company also donated £1 for each broker policy bound, and organised a range of internal events, such as dress down days, coffee mornings and bacon sandwich sales. Donations by the staff of prizes for summer fete and Christmas gifts for carers raised further funds, and the company provided coaches to transport carers to a Butlins fun day.
