March 15, 2012 - PRLog -- The newly completed Think Low Carbon Centre at Barnsley College was officially opened by Frank Johnston Chair of Governors, Lord Redesdale and Channel 4’s very own Restoration Man, George Clarke. The Centre’s aim is to support small and medium sized businesses to increase their understanding of sustainable technologies and construction methods.

George Clark, host of the popular television programme Restoration Man, expressed his support for the new Centre, Mr Clarke said: “The new centre could only be good for the building industry”. He added there should be no reason why "good and beautiful buildings" should not be built ecologically.

On top of the essential ribbon cutting ceremony, the events of the day included exhibitions by the businesses that came together to create Barnsley College’s vision, including Jefferson Sheard Architects and G F Tomlinson. Jefferson Sheard were proud to see the fruits of their labour and Phillip Pollington, Associate Director and Architect heavily involved in the project commented, “We feel privileged to be associated with Yorkshire’s first sustainable technology centre. I am proud that we have designed a building that will function as an integral skills aid to businesses locally and regionally well into the future”.

Nick Banks, Construction Director of G F Tomlinson Building Limited commented “We are proud to have constructed this centre of excellence, incorporating the use of sustainable technology and techniques which will grow awareness and enhance knowledge, which will in turn equip local businesses with the skills to meet the growing demand for energy-efficient buildings”.

Speeches were made by College Principal Colin Booth, TV presenter and architect George Clark, and Chairman of the Carbon Management Association Lord Redesdale, who made clear his enthusiasm for the Think Low Carbon Centre against a backdrop of rising energy costs for businesses and householders alike.

Colin Booth, Barnsley College Principal, said: “One of our main aims is to up-skill Barnsley’s workforce and businesses to make them the most sought after professionals and trades people in the country. We hope the Centre and our wider Think Low Carbon initiative will boost our town’s economy and make it a magnet for new companies to invest in.”
