La Trobe University’s ‘Principles of Physics’ is the First Science Collection launched

La Trobe University is the first and only Australian University to provide course content on iTunes U, joining a community consisting of universities such as Stanford, Oxford University and Yale University.

The new online physics course coincides with a recently released report commissioned by Australia’s Chief Scientist, which shows the number of university science enrolments between 2002 and 2010 has flatlined.

Professor Rosenberg said that La Trobe University was committed to teaching physics, chemistry and mathematics, the ‘enabling sciences’ not only using traditional methods but also using new technology.

‘Through iTunes U, we are able to take physics and other courses to an international market, sharing our academic expertise and making science come alive to an online audience.’

Principles of Physics offer three lectures every week and is taught during the first semester.

The course instructs in solving problems of classical physics, such as mechanics, thermodynamics, waves and optics. It provides the basis for further study in physics, engineering or other sciences offered at La Trobe University.

Students also learn about linear and rotational kinematics and dynamics, geometric optics, thermodynamics, and simple harmonic motion in the subject.

The subject is taught by the Head of Physics, Professor Paul Pigram, and first year Physics Coordinator, Dr David Hoxley.

Since its launch in October 2009, La Trobe University on iTunes U has established itself as an important member of the iTunes U community, with more than 600 podcasts and videos covering the spread of the University’s wealth of knowledge and more that 3 million downloads from all over the world.
