Green Prescription, a Free gov Health Program in New Zealand

This is a government initiative to encourage and help New Zealanders to be more physically active. A Green Prescription is a doctor or practice nurse's written advice for patients to be more active as a part of their health management.

The goal of Green Prescription program is to accentuate on exercise and lifestyle changes so that patients do not reply only on medications for healthy life.

The green prescription is written after discussing the issues and goals in the consultation

How It Works?

There are two options:

Next time you visit your doctor or practice nurse ask them to give your details directly to your local Active Living coordinator, who will then get in touch with you.

Phone 0800 22 84 83 and you will be connected to the Active Living coordinator at your nearest regional sports trust.

If you have a heart condition it strongly recommended to have prescription through your physician.

What Happens Next?

Once you're in touch with your coordinator, your regional sports trust will offer you the following:

Advice on the benefits of being active

help with finding suitable activities in your community

introductions to people with similar interests to yourself

help with keeping an eye on your progress

keeping you up to date through a regular newsletter

This is free service for everyone and is well worth the time it takes to find out about it.

Benefits of Green Prescription

A research study published in New Zealand Medical Journal concluded that Green Prescription program is less expensive yet highly effective to improve patients' life naturally.

Another study in British Medical Journal found significant improvement in patients' health within 12 months under Green Prescription program (without any side effects).
