March 9, 2012 - PRLog -- In honor of 50 years of operation at its Terminal Island facility, SA Recycling unveiled a wide array of environmental innovations recently to a cadre of local politicians, port authorities and community.  LA Supervisor Don Knabe, Port of LA’s Executive Director Geraldine Knatz and SA Recycling CEO George Adams were among the VIPs to review the industry-leading technological advancements from the past 50 years that have made Terminal Island one of the most environmentally friendly facilities of its kind in the world.
One of the largest recycling enterprises on the West Coast, SA Recycling gathers, shreds, shears and sorts metal from cars, appliances, old bridges, railroad cars and other large-scale items. The metal is then shipped overseas where it is melted down into new steel and repurposed. To ensure that the process is environmentally sound, SA Recycling introduced the following:

·       Air Purification System: Including a custom made dust collector, regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) and scrubber; this air purifying and pollution control system uses the best available control technology, and was installed pursuant to a permit issued by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. SA Recycling became the first company in the United States to utilize this cutting edge technology in an automobile shredder.

·       Storm Water Management Program: SA Recycling installed the most complex water treatment facility in the port for its storm water management program, which gathers and purifies run-off rainwater, recycles and reuses it in its processes.

·       Electric Shredders: SA Recycling installed a clean all-electric 9,000 HP shredder, one of the largest and most efficient on the West Coast.

·       Industry-First Sorting System: Once the metal is shredded, it is processed through a state-of-the-art sorting system with the advanced ability to separate and recover aluminum, copper, insulated wire, brass and other non-ferrous metals, resulting in more materials being recycled and less piling up in local landfills.

“We are constantly striving to develop new technologies and serve as a good neighbor in the community," said SA Recycling CEO George Adams. "We are proud of our accomplishments in introducing these innovations and are committed to continuing to develop new ways to protect the well being of the communities we serve."
SA Recycling now operates 50 recycling centers in 3 states. For more information on SA Recycling and to find the nearest recycling center, visit www.sarecycling.com.
