Casting Director and Parent Opposes The Weinstein Company’s “Bully” Film Rating

Casting Director and Parent Angela M. Hutchinson Opposes The Weinstein Company’s “Bully” Film Rating Change Plea to the MPAA from R to PG-13

March 8, 2012 - PRLog -- According to recent reports, over 135,000 supporters have signed a petition to urge the Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA) to change the R rating of a documentary film to a PG-13 rating.  The movie “Bully” received its R-rating due to language.  University of Michigan graduate and Casting Director, Angela M. Hutchinson who is a mother of two, encourages the MPAA to stay committed to their mission:  “championing the creative and artistic freedoms of filmmakers, while working to rally public and private institutions around the world to the cause of safeguarding intellectual property rights, advancing technology-driven innovation, and opening markets to the uniquely powerful and increasingly global medium of film.”

News releases state that The Weinstein Company is “Urging the MPAA” and “135,00 Push MPAA on ‘Bully’ Rating.”  Hutchinson responds, “Urging and pushing... Now, doesn’t that sound like bullying?”  If the filmmakers are sincerely concerned that the R rating will not allow their intended audience to view the film, Hutchinson suggests they bleep out or remove the language that is making the film rated R.  “Generally speaking, a movie about bullying teens should not have a R rating so those under 17 can watch it; however, filmmakers have a responsibility to create appropriate content that leads to a MPAA assigned PG-13 rating,” says Hutchinson.

“As a Casting Director, I work frequently with filmmakers so I especially understand when a director or writer wants to stay authentic to the story’s vision or committed to their craft and the art. In the case of Weinstein’s ‘Bully’ film, sure many teens have probably heard the profanity used in the documentary that garnered its R-rating, but the MPAA has an accountability not only to artists, but also to the general public (movie goers) in which they serve,” says Hutchinson. “MPAA board, don’t let’ em bully you! Stand firm by your long-standing rating system.”
