PRLog (Press Release) - Mar. 8, 2012 - What makes a good blog name?  In my opinion, this is the culmination of several factors in which each factor holds significant importance and its absence causes me to toss out the name and move on to other terms.  Developing a good blog name is an art as it needs to make sense to the reader, hold high value with advertisers, and be part of a niche with rising trends.  It can take a lot of time to find just the right name, however I find searching for good blog names to be extremely enjoyable.

The first thing to understand about finding a good blog name is that you want it to be the exact target keyword phrase that you're chasing after.  This includes listing the words in the same order.  Google's Keyword Tool is an excellent free tool that allows you to search by exact match so that you can find how often an exact term is searched.  This is extremely important for new sites without any authority on the web or large web presence as it is a leg up on the rest of the competition who doesn't have an exact domain match to the keyword phrase.

Every keyword research tool has its quirks and most all of them will pop out keyword phrases that make little sense to me.  The best way to avoid these is through simple common sense.  The last thing you want is to purchase a domain and spend three months developing it to figure out that no one is actually searching for this term.  It is best to cross-check different keyword research tools when you encounter a questionable keyword phrase.  Check out our Niche Blogger's Tool Belt for free and paid products that will help you with your research.

Another critical aspect is regarding keyword value.  Most keyword research tools have a category which shows how much advertisers are willing to pay to be listed in the top listings.  Now, value varies from category to category and there are also other ways to earn revenue off of a blog besides Adsense, but this is a readily available piece of data that you can compare across similar keywords in a particular niche.  Unless you're already familiar with other avenues of revenue generation, start here and then branch out afterwards.

Lastly, make sure that the niche you are after is a rising trend.  As an obvious example, don't start blogging about cassette tapes when digital media is on the rise.  Look for niches that are just starting to develop, look for products that haven't been created yet such as new models and versions and develop blogs tied into them.  If it is a year or two down the road, imagine the site authority you'll have if you've had your blog up and running for that long with so many backlinks, domain age, and page rank.  This will greatly aid in winding up on the first page of Google's search results.

In closing, finding a good blog name takes work and entails many stars aligning to ensure you have a quality set of keywords that will catapult your site to the first page of search results which is where you'll get more traffic than you can imagine.  Take your time and pick the niche that is right for you.  In fact, spend more than one day researching niche ideas so that you have time to reflect and reassure yourself that the keyword phrase and domain name you're purchasing is the right one.  Above all else, find a good blog name that you find entertaining.  Good luck blogging!
