By: City and County of Swansea Famed for his excellent performances, both in solo recitals and concerto appearances, and described as “one of the truly great musicians of our time” by The Times, Llŷr Williams has regularly performed with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in recent years. In this concert he will tackle Bartók’s Piano Concerto No 3 – unlike many of Bartók’s other works, this is a light, airy and playful concerto that shows off the virtuosic ability of the soloist. Also featured in the concert are the Three Hungarian Sketches by Rózsa – a composer who is probably more famous for composing for film, including his soundtracks to Ben-Hur and the Alfred Hitchcock film Spellbound. The second half of the evening starts with the Overture from Los esclavos felices by Arriaga, described as the “Spanish Mozart”; followed by the real thing: Mozart’s majestic final symphony, his Symphony No 41, Jupiter. A popular work, Mozart’s final symphony is a joyful piece that revolutionised classical music at the time. Tickets for this concert, conducted by Roberto Minczuk, are priced at £12.50 to £15.50 (discounts available) and are available from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Audience Line on 0800 052 1812 or Swansea Grand Theatre Box Office on 01792 475715.
