New test and inspection periods. There is a lot of rubbish talked about Pat Testing in the Uk these days, such as controversy over Pat Test Intervals , but if you look at the guidelines there are clear suggested periods for full electrical inspection and testing and also for formal visual inspections. Obviously you need to take into account the type of appliance whether it is class one or class two and location of the electrical item to determine test periods. Obviously the tester must have the knowledge and confidence to be able to remove an appliance from service and be able to confirm to the office manager what the reason for the item failing the test is. I have seen testers who leave such appliances in use even when they give a fail reading on a tester such as a primetest. Having said that many surge protected extension leads will give a false fail reading because of the surge protection circuits therein. Long extension leads will also give a high earth resistance reading which is fine. Basically there is no substitute for experience, you need to have tested a variety of different appliances including computers and monitors and been able to get good readings repeatedly in order to be farmiliar with your test equipment. The original pat test machines were large heavy meters that needed to be plugged into the mains themselves which made testing tedious and laborious. These days improvements in the technology have produced hand held battery powered pat testers that are so much more manouverable and faster to use.
Once the item has passed the test you need to record the results clearly in a way that complies with pat legislation, this may be done by hand or entered into a more sophisticated test machine. Also a matching numbered id label is attached firmly to the appliance showing the test date and retest period, a professional pat testing company will fix the labels neatly all in matching locations for easy recognition. They will also liase with the office manager in order to make sure employees are ready to power down computers for testing. Great care must be taken whilst working in an office environment to ensure the correct items are unplugged, and not machines people are still working on, as they could lose their work.also test engineers need to replace wiring neatly and safely so that it is not a trip hazard.
