Fiber to USB Converter/Extender System Provides High Speed Connection to Distant USB Devices

A new Host and 4-Port Hub Fiber to USB Converter/Extender System extends USB connections up to 500 meters via a high speed fiber interface. This system enables connection of four USB devices to a PC or notebook.

PRLog - Mar. 7, 2012 - CRANSTON, R.I. -- Electro Standards Laboratories, Cranston, RI, announces a pair of products to convert Fiber to USB and extend USB connections up to 500 meters via a high speed fiber interface. The desktop configuration Model 4662 is the USB powered host unit and the Model 5169 is the 4-port USB wired hub. This duet of products converts USB 2.0 compliant data from a standard PC Host interface, Model 4662, over fiber to a remote 4-port powered Hub, Model 5169. This pair of products can simultaneously connect up to four USB Interface Devices to a desktop PC or notebook. These products offer high speed connection to distant USB devices over multimode fiber optic cable.

This fiber to USB converter/extender system is ideal for applications involving PC communications that require high speed, secure communication, and optical isolation.  This system reliably extends USB communication in environments that are subject to high EM or RF interference that might corrupt communication over a copper interface.

Typical applications include industrial control, KVM extension, remote desktop USB connections, and remote USB device sharing such as printers, scanners and storage devices. These units offer true plug and play operation with support for Windows®, Mac OS®, Linux®, and support all USB devices types: Control, Interrupt, Bulk and Isochronous up to 480 Mbps. This set is designed to operate from -0º C to +50º C, with component ratings that meet or exceed 0º C to 70º C. Both units feature ESD protection circuitry on all copper USB I/O interfaces. Power inputs are protected from transients and the 4-port Hub provides the USB standard of 500mA per port. The Model 4662 has an LED display that indicates Power, Fiber Link Active, and Host Active. The Model 5169 LED indicator indicates Port Active.
