New York, NY - Richard P Brown, MD, and Patricia Gerbarg, MD, Integrative Psychiatry experts, and co-authors of a new book, Non-Drug Treatments for ADHD: New Options for Kids, Adults, & Clinicians (WW Norton, 2012), present two full-day workshops: “New ADD Treatments” Friday, March 23, and “Therapeutic Breathing,” Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the annual Psychotherapy Networker Symposium at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert St. NW, Washington, D.C.

Drs. Brown and Gerbarg teach a unique fusion of ancient and modern mind-body approaches derived from QiGong, yoga, Christian monks, Coherent Breathing, Open Focus Meditation, and martial arts.   Their Friday workshop presents a multimodal therapy approach to attain the highest level of functioning for each client and reviews the role of environmental factors, genetics, and neurotransmitters in Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). On Saturday, they teach powerful self-regulating, anxiety-reducing breathing techniques to benefit both clients and therapists. Healing practices for PTSD and recovery from mass disasters are included.

For further information and registration visit psychotherapynetworker.org.  The Brown/Gerbarg workshops are listed as 225 and 412/512. There are CE credits for the workshops.

Dr. Brown, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York, gives over 200 medical lectures every year, including full-day courses for the American Psychiatric Association and other professional groups. He is a certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), Yoga, Qi Gong, and meditation.  His Breath~Body~Mind workshops, sponsored by the non-profit, Serving Those Who Serve (www.STWS.org), help New Yorkers recover from the effects of the September 11th World Trade Center Attacks.

Dr. Gerbarg, Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College, graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.  In addition to clinical practice, she provides consultation and facilitates the development of research projects on the health benefits of mind-body practices for recovery from mass disasters such at the September 11th World Trade Center attacks, the southeast Asian tsunami, war and slavery in Sudan, and military personnel.

Psychotherapy Networker is a highly-regarded publication.  For more than 25 years it has earned a wide readership for its incisive coverage of the everyday challenges of clinical practice, as well as providing perspectives on critical ideas, innovations, and social issues which shape the direction of the profession.  Its annual symposium is considered “psychotherapy’s premiere conference”, according to editor Richard Simon, PhD,  and “is a community gathering of like-minded professionals, zealous to get together and share what they know – and it really couldn’t be a better opportunity for a mental health professional.”

Dr. Brown and Dr. Gerbarg are co-authors of the award-winning How To Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton, 2009) with Philip Muskin, MD, and The Rhodiola Revolution (Rodale). Their other new book and CD set, The Healing Power of the Breath, will be released by Shambala in June. They have an Internet site at HaveAHealthyMind.com with mental health information, resources, and a free newsletter.
