As a result of IRS’ expanded enforcement actions, there has been a renewed interest in the services of “tax help” or “tax resolution firms.” A recent Google search delivered  almost 11 million results in what has become a needed yet very competitive service, presenting consumers with the challenge of discovering and screening the most qualified and results-oriented companies.  We’ve all seen those late night television advertisements promising settling IRS debts for pennies on the dollar.

Mulkins’ article was in response to a reader’s question asking Mulkins about companies who were advertising on late night cable television who claim that they can settle a person’s tax debt with the IRS down to "pennies on the dollar”.  Although Mulkins’ article may have left one to believe that it’s impossible to find a reputable tax resolution firm, says Jeffrey Galante, founder and executive officer with JG TAX GROUP, says that “there are still legitimate tax resolution firms out there with experienced attorneys, CPA’s and Enrolled Agents, who can do an excellent job of representing their clients, and will stand behind their work.”

Galante further says that “representing clients before the IRS requires a person to have significant tax knowledge, inside IRS knowledge and experience, negotiation and mediation skills, and the personality needed to aggressively defend a client before the IRS.”  Galante has some specific advice for taxpayers who feel the need to go this extra step beyond “traditional” tax preparation.  As a former IRS Revenue Agent and senior manager, Galante further advises that “everyone has the right to be represented before the IRS in order to resolve their tax problems. The decision to choose the right firm for IRS defense is important and can be life changing. He says further that consumers should take the time needed to find out the names and qualifications of the tax professionals on staff, and then determine how long the company has been in business.”

Some of the websites Galante has seen are actually lead-generation websites, and not actual tax resolution companies. These firms have no professionals on staff and they don’t actually do any tax resolution work. Instead, these companies take your name and telephone number and then forward your information or “lead” to an unknown tax resolution company.  Galante has seen a dramatic increase in the number of recently opened tax resolution firms and is concerned that the public might not be adequately represented by these firms.
