Social Activist Jeff Johnson Set to Encourage Students to Be a Catalyst for Change with panel of South Florida Influencers and Community Leaders at the South Florida Youth Summit's #I am Change Symposium

March 6, 2012 - PRLog -- FAU and a core group of South Florida community organizations are hosting the inaugural  “#IamCHANGE” Youth Symposium and College Fair on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Miami City Carol Senior High School (3422 N.W. 187th Street , Miami Gardens) from 7pm-9pm.  South Florida youth will be challenged to develop discipline, self-confidence and creativity needed to succeed in life . This impactful event is composed of a leadership team who promises to energize and motivate the students. WEDR 99 Jamz radio personality, Miss Kimmy will lend her effervescent personality and talent as the evening’s mistress of ceremony. Award-winning investigative journalist, social activist and “authentic” voice for change, Jeff Johnson will serve as the moderator. The panel participants include Thelma Gibson(Civil Rights trailblazer), Darius Graham (Attorney and DC Social Innovation Project co-founder),former Assistant State Attorney, Kionne L. McGhee (current Assistant Regional Counsel), Vanessa Walker (Executive Director-Owen Walker Junior Foundation),Mfonobong Essiet(Miss Black Florida 2012) Leo R. Stoney ( Youth Pastor, Orlando Metropolitan Christian Center) and 10 year old Joshua Williams ( President of Joshua’s Heart Foundation).
The areas of focus include; science, technology, engineering, mathematics, financial education, low graduation rates, leadership development and youth violence. This landmark symposium serves as the foundation for the group’s comprehensive youth focused outreach and educational initiatives that will take place starting in May 2012.
“We have created a series of educational and cultural enrichment workshops with a commitment to provide a blueprint to empower the youth ambassadors of our future. We are grateful for the collective team of individual, organizations and sponsors who have come together to help provide resources, inspiration and guidance for the young people of South Florida,” states Chairman Shevrin Jones.
Featured performances include the Miami Carol City High School Pep Band and Dancers. Spoken word artist Dichotomy will inspire the kids through poetry and spoken word, along with gospel singer Malcolm Hawkins.
