The Silver Star Families of America Expands Program to Distribute Blankets to Hospice Veterans

March 4, 2012 - PRLog -- Steve Newton, Founder of the SSFOA stated:  “Our Chaplaincy has been providing blankets that have been prayed over to our hospice veterans for years.  These blankets are provided free of charge to Veteran Medical Centers who have Hospice/Palliative care units and are given to any patient that wants one.”



“The program has had an overwhelmingly positive response from our veterans and their families and we have decided to extend the program to our passing veterans that may not be in a V.A. setting.”



“We have also been asked why we spend money, effort and time to send something to one who will not be here for long.  Some have no family.  These blankets are arms to hold them, to comfort them and give hope that they are not alone and that their service/sacrifice was not in vain.  America remembers. America cares.  America stands by their side.  These veterans are like you and I; they have served their country and have done their duty.  Now at the end of their life they need to know they are not forgotten.”



“Their journey to their last duty station should not be a journey that they make alone.  The SSFOA Prayer Blanket is sent with a word of encouragement, which may not mean much to you but it may mean the world to someone who is passing.  We do not take pictures of our dying; we do not exploit them for donations but the stories that we have been told command attention even from the hardest heart.”



“Many that receive the Prayer Blanket stay covered with it until their death.  Some blankets become a family keepsake; some blankets are buried with their recipients.  But the bottom line is we will leave no veteran behind.”
