There is a 1 in 2 chances that your child, neice or nephew will  need to stay in a hospital during their childhood.

How can you help relieve the fear and uncertainty of hospitalization for your child?
By Learning as much as possible from your child's physician about the condition, the tests to be performed, the procedure and what is expected in the recoperation period will help you to explain to your child his or hers conditiion and what will be happening.  

Visiting the hospital with your child if this is a planned hospitalization and learning the routine of the hospital ward, meeting the nursing staff will help you and your child understand and lessen the fear and anxiety of their condition and make the hospital stay of your child as close to his normal routine. The more knowledge you have of your child's illness and the procedures that will be done: the more informed you become about your child's condition the easier it will be to explain and reassure your child of his or her condition. Being perfectly honest and telling him that yes some of the procedures may be painful and may hurt but they are necessary for their recovery and this
will help releave some of their fears.

The more your child knows about what to expect during their stay the less tension and fear they will experience. Your child will be bombarded with strange noises, new smells, eating new food and different routines besides seeing strangely dressed strangers and medical staff. Your child might feel that they are being hospitalized because they did something wrong. Reassure them that they did nothing wrong and explain in simple words that they can understand  the reason for their hospitalization.

If it is a planned hospitalization, let your child assist you in packing their pillow, sleepwear and a favorite toy or book to take with them that is familiar and comforting. This helps to relieve fear and provides security. Remember to pack a robe, a pair of slippers or sneakers so they can meet other children to play with and realize they are not the only child that is sick. Be sure to pack  or buy a pair of button down the front pajamas (sleep n play pajamas) with front opening,this will help the frequent  checking of monitoring equipment and IVs. Relieving the fear and uncertainty of their hospital stay will speed up their recovery .

Your presence, comfort, support and involvement in their care is vital to their quick recovery and emotional stability. Keeping them involved in play and with activities will ease the pain and discomfort and the fear of the strange hospital surroundings.
