March 4, 2012 - PRLog -- On Saturday, March 31, the New York Repertory Orchestra will present the music of two of the greatest musical giants - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Dmitri Shostakovich.

Rarely heard, the monumental Symphony No. 8 in C minor by Dmitri Shostakovich is one of the composer's greatest and most gripping works. Composed at the height of World War II, many call it his most tragic work. It is eloquently expressive of the horrors brought to the Russian people during the war. A world-weary musical testimony, it isn't surprising that the Soviet Union banned it until 1956.

What better contrast to the harsh realities of modern war than the musical clarity of Woflgang Amadeus Mozart? His Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola is one of his most beautiful and joyous creations, balancing the flow of exuberant melodies with a clear harmonic and structural perfection that is unrivaled anywhere. This night of music is bound to touch and illuminate all corners of the soul.

We are thrilled to have two virtuoso Mozarteans as soloists for this performance: Violinist Toby Appel (making his NYRO debut), and violist John Dexter (a NYRO favorite!). Bringing their expertise as chamber musicians and soloists to bear, we know this will be a high point of the NYRO season.
