Mirena Side Effects Similar to Earlier IUD Woes

It may be making a comeback, but the IUD, now produced by Mirena, is drawing the ire of many women who are complaining of its side effects.

March 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Despite the manufacturer’s claim that the Mirena IUD is safe, women are sounding off loudly about the problems of the birth control device.

Dogged by a sordid history of health problems, the IUD, which was invented in the 1960s, was removed from the market in the 1980s when the Dalkon Shield IUD and its maker, A. H. Robbins, struggled with a class action lawsuit over the device’s infection-causing design. But the product is seeing a second life since 2001, when the Mirena IUD, produced by Bayer Health Care Pharmaceuticals, was introduced.

Unfortunately, this new IUD, which contains the hormone progestin, appears to be saddled with side effects as well.

Jessica Bonner, of East Brunswick, NJ has uncovered a growing discontent about the Mirena device and is spearheading an effort against Bayer with plans to file a class action lawsuit. On the website Mirena Awareness, she asks for the testimonies of other harmed women, pleading, “We suffered with pain and we need our justice, for loss of time, loss of jobs, pain medications we have taken, marriages that have fallen apart, unknown pain….”

Growing Discontent

The FDA warns about Mirena’s potential problems and side effects, which include unintended pregnancy, embedment of the device into the uterine wall, perforation of the uterus, expulsion of the device, ovarian cysts, and breast cancer. It mentions that more than one out of ten users experience “adverse reactions,” including spotting, irregular bleeding, heavy bleeding, absence of menstruation, and ovarian cysts.

On another website, LifeTimeMoms, a woman who used the Mirena device complains of “PMS all the time, bad acne on my face and back, and worst of all I gained 20 lbs!!” The post prompted 375 comments, and a large majority reported negative reactions.

Women in La Grange, La Grange Park, Brookfield, Lyons, Countryside, Western Springs, Westchester, Hinsdale, Berwyn and nearby cities who think they might be pregnant and who are considering the Mirena IUD should call Women’s Care Center of La Grange, at 708-352-5000 for a free pregnancy test and more information.
