In the past 18 months HUD has raised the yearly mortgage insurance by 0.7%.  In addition HUD has increased the upfront charge to the consumer by .75% which was just announced this past week.  Combined with the recent expiration of mortgage insurance tax deductions this makes homebuying more expensive than it has been at any time since 2008.
