March 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Entry numbers for the fifth annual Keighley 10K Challenge, organised in support of Sue Ryder's Manorlands hospice have been given a huge boost by Steeton-based Acorn Stairlifts. More than 60 members of staff from Acorn have signed up to take on the challenge of the multi terrain run and walk, being held this year on Mothers Day, Sunday 18 March.

Their entry is part of the Corporate Challenge, new to the event this year, which encourages local businesses to get active whilst raising vital funds for the Oxenhope based charity in the process.

The staff at Acorn were motivated to take part following the recent installation of two Acorn Stairlifts at the Skipton home of Sue Ryder patient Lucy Moore, who said they had 'transformed her life'.

Acorn's Company Secretary Dave Belmont explained, "Our staff wanted to help transform other people's lives - and have fun doing it. It's great that walkers are encouraged to participate, as well as runners. We are especially delighted that Lucy has agreed to start the event."

One of the Acorn teams has already raised over £2,000 in sponsorship.

Event organiser Andrew Wood commented: "We are delighted that the team at Acorn have got involved in such large numbers. We hope that more people will sign up to support their local hospice as we'd love 2012, the event's fifth year, to be the most successful to date."

Last year the event attracted a record field of more than 750 starters and raised over £28,000 for the Oxenhope based charity which organises the event in conjunction with Sport Keighley. This year organisers hope to exceed the number of runners and walkers who will tread the multi terrain route through the town's roads, paths and parks.

The money raised from the event will assist patients to uphold their independence for as long as possible. Through its work, the hospice helps put back what conditions like cancer can take away from people: reassurance, self esteem, freedom and comfort. Each year the hospice needs to raise £1.2 million in voluntary donations to continue providing this care.
